Captain Kirk, Boldly Going Leaked as Part of an Unannounced MTG Star Trek Commander Product
Captain Kirk, Boldly Going has leaked on Reddit, with the post itself titled "Star Trek Commander product confirmed." The card surfaced in r/MTGRumors on 25 May 2026 and has generated over 800 upvotes. Wizards of the Coast has made no official announcement about any Star Trek set or Commander product.
What Does the Card Do?
Captain Kirk, Boldly Going
Captain Kirk, Boldly Going is a Bant ({G}{W}{U}) Legendary Creature carrying collector number 0085. His enters-the-battlefield ability lets you search your library and/or graveyard for a card named Starship Enterprise, a Spacecraft artifact creature, and put it directly onto the battlefield. If the Enterprise is not found, you may search for a basic land instead, putting it onto the battlefield tapped.
He also functions as a lord, providing a bonus to other creatures you control. The "library and/or graveyard" clause is arguably the cleverest part of the design: it means the Enterprise coming back after removal is baked into the commander's text, removing the usual vulnerability of building around a single named artifact. One commenter noted the land fallback alone was "honestly enough to pass the card" if the Enterprise is unavailable.
Based on the set symbol (described in the thread as the Starfleet delta behind a shield shape), the product appears to be a standalone Commander release rather than a full Draft set. No release date has been confirmed.
Colour Identity Controversy
Kirk's Bant colour identity is drawing considerable pushback. The community consensus on r/MTGRumors is that Kirk, as a character, needs red: his impulsive nature, emotionally-driven decisions, and willingness to break the rules to save his crew are quintessential Boros territory. "Color identity is a miss on Kirk," wrote the top commenter, who described themselves as "the biggest Star Trek/MTG crossover defender you'll easily find."
The counterargument is that the Federation as a faction maps naturally to {G}{W}{U}, which suggests Captain Kirk, Boldly Going is the face commander of a Federation-themed Bant deck rather than a definitive take on the character. His collector number 0085 also points to him not being the headline face commander, leaving the door open for a separate, potentially red-inclusive Kirk elsewhere in the set.
Community speculation is already running on Klingon, Borg, Romulan, and Dominion-themed decks alongside the confirmed Federation product.
Is the Leak Genuine?
A small number of users raised authenticity concerns, pointing to blurry text on the left side of the card image and unusual italics on the Starship Enterprise name. These objections have not gained traction, and the majority of the thread is treating the card as real.
Wizards of the Coast have not responded. As spotted on r/MTGRumors, the full card image is available in the original post.
A Star Trek Commander product, if official, would represent the broadest Universes Beyond licence yet, with decades of television spanning multiple series to draw from. Whether Kirk eventually gets his red mana symbol remains to be seen.
